The Benefits & Challenges of Bivocational Ministry

“I feel called to full time ministry.”

I hear it a lot. Usually a young 20-something is conveying that they think it’s time to ditch their “secular” job and go “all in” for the Lord’s work. (I'll save conversation around the dualistic "secular vs sacred" for another time.)

A couple questions I like to ask in response are...

“Do you mean you want to receive a paycheck from a religious non-profit?”

“If you were able to be effective in what God’s calling you to, does it really matter where your paycheck comes from?”

See, I believe that being "bi-vocational” (working a job in the marketplace while ministering) holds tremendous advantages and should actually be our first choice, not our last resort
